I hung up the phone and stared at the wall. I’d failed.

I guess the rational part of my brain knew even then that I had other avenues to explore, but right then I just plain wanted to sulk, so I indulged the mood and let disproportionate disappointment fall on me like a rainstorm. I huddled down on my couch, the one where I used to sit with David, and let the misery take me. I sat with my knees under my chin and my arms wrapped around my legs. I was cold but I didn’t do anything about that, either. Grief was my blanket. I couldn’t even cry. Dr. Scheuer was going to be so disappointed. David would be so disappointed. I’d failed him, too.
